DETAILED OVERVIEW OF A 3D/4D SCAN
This 3D/4D baby scan gives you a unique opportunity to bond with your unborn baby.
The 3D/4D baby scan allows you to see your baby's features, eyes, nose, lips, and expressions in incredible detail before they're born. You'll even be able to get a glimpse of their little personality too!
Using the latest ultrasound technology, we show you how your baby looks and moves by generating life-like images and videos of your baby in the womb.
When is the best time for a 3D/4D baby scan?
A 3D/4D scan can be done any time during your pregnancy, but we suggest between 28 and 36 weeks. If you have an anterior placenta where the placenta lies in front please do not book before 32 weeks. If you are having twins, we recommend 22 to 26 weeks.
2D/3D/4D imaging varies from patient to patient.
An initial 2D ultrasound scan is performed to check the baby's position and to listen to the heartbeat, this looks like your traditional black and white ultrasound.
The 3D images show your baby in much greater detail than 2D. The 4D aspect is the video aspect of the scan.
The number and length of 4D clips is determined by the position and movement of your baby. We try to provide you with a satisfying and varied amount of images on the day. Video clips are generally only a few seconds in length.
You should allow 20–30 minutes for your appointment in case baby is shy and you have to go for a walk. Walking sometimes encourages baby to move into a better position.
During your session, we will scan for 20 to 30 minutes dependent upon which package you choose to allow us enough time to obtain 2D, 3D and 4D images of your baby.
Your safety and comfort is our top concern in delivering this unique and special experience. If your baby is being 'shy' or in an awkward position, we may ask you to take a walk and have a fizzy drink, which encourages baby to move. This will also lengthen the time of your appointment.
Finding out the gender is optional
At your request, we can determine the gender of the baby with an accuracy of about 97%. Finding out if your baby is a boy or girl is entirely optional. If you don't want to know what you are having that is no problem at all.
Digital Keepsake Images and Video
In addition to the four printed hard copy keepsake photos, your scan images will be sent to your phone/email via an encrypted digital link for download and viewing. This latest technology brings your scan images to you so they can be saved forever or shared on social media.
How long is the scan/ appointment?
Depending on which package you buy, we include a 20-minute session or a 30-minute session to include a foetal growth report to check baby's growth and development.
For the amount of viewing time, we follow the ALARA guidelines outlined by ALARA principle (as low as reasonably achievable).
Number of appointment guests?
We can comfortably accommodate multiple guests, including children, for this scan. This scan is a family affair!

FAQ
3D/4D Baby Scan FAQs
Do I need to book an appointment?
Yes, ultrasound exams do need an appointment. If you cannot attend your appointment we appreciate if you can give 24 hours notice.
What stage can I have a 3D/4D scan?
The 3D/4D scan is best after 28 weeks once baby’s features are more filled out. 3D/4D scans can be done up to 40 weeks, however late in the gestation the imaging quality may decrease as the baby's position changes to face mother’s spine and the amniotic fluid levels decrease.
Why is a 3D/4D scan performed?
3D/4D scans are a non-medical ultrasound to bond with the baby, see the baby's features in 3D and their movements in 4D. However they can aid in observing if any abnormality is present on the face, such as a cleft palate.
Can we estimate weight with a 3D/4D ultrasound?
With the 3D/4D scan itself the weight is not calculated by the sonographer as it is not a medical scan. A Growth Measurements Report add on is available when booking the 3D scan which will include the weight/size of the baby and also review the placenta it’s position and the baby’s anatomy.
Will I be able to see the scan?
Yes, the ultrasound is available for you to view on a large screen located at the end of the ultrasound couch. The sonographer will explain what you are looking at and point out various items to look at on the ultrasound. You will also be able to hear the baby’s heartbeat.
Will I be able to find out the gender of my baby?
If you haven’t found out the gender at previous scans you can request for the sonographer to tell the gender of the baby. However, the baby may not be in a favorable position to determine the gender. If you would like to know the gender of your baby, please inform us on your registration form and confirm with your sonographer at the beginning of your ultrasound.
How should I prepare for a 3D/4D scan?
When you attend for a 3D/4D scan you will not need a full urinary bladder. You will need to know your established due date. It is important to wear loose comfortable clothing.
What happens during the 3D/4D scan?
The scan is non-invasive trans-abdominal scan. Gel and the transducer is placed on the abdomen. During the exam if baby is not in a good position (i.e if hands completely cover the face, position is face down or pushed against the placenta) or there is not adequate fluid in front of the face, the sonographer may request that the patient go for a walk or to drink a cold fizzy drink or juice to possibly stimulate movement from the baby.
What do I receive during the 3D/4D scan?
You can expect to receive 20 digital images, 2 /3 video clips and 4 glossy prints. With the Growth Report add on you will also receive a growth measurments report.
How long is the 3D/4D scan?
Depending on the package you select the scan will be either 20 or 30 min.
Can family members attend my ultrasound appointment?
A pregnancy scan is a family affair at our clinic, so you can share your baby scan experience by bringing whomever you want and as many people as you like.
