What Is an Ovulation Scan?
An ovulation scan monitors your menstrual cycle to help estimate when ovulation may be expected. By measuring the size of follicles in your ovaries and tracking their development, we can provide timing guidance for intercourse or fertility procedures.
While timing is one factor in conception, success also depends on egg quality, sperm parameters, uterine health, and other individual factors.
What We Assess
During this scan we will examine:
- Follicle size and number — measuring developing follicles in both ovaries
- Dominant follicle — identifying the follicle most likely to release an egg
- Corpus luteum — confirming ovulation has occurred (post-ovulation scans)
- Uterus — size, shape, and position
- Endometrium — thickness and appearance of the womb lining
- Fibroids or polyps — checking for any that may affect implantation
What the measurements tell us:
- •A mature follicle ready to ovulate typically measures 18-24mm
- •After ovulation, the follicle collapses and becomes the corpus luteum
- •These changes help us assess where you are in your cycle
When to Have Your Scans
Ovulation monitoring typically starts around Day 9 of your menstrual cycle, with scans performed at 1-2 day intervals:
These are guidelines only, please follow the advice of your GP/Fertility Care Provider.
| Cycle Day | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Day 9-11 | Identify developing follicles, measure sizes |
| Day 12-14 | Track dominant follicle approaching ovulation size |
| Day 14-16 | Confirm ovulation has occurred or may be approaching |
Day 1 is the first day of menstrual bleeding. These are general guidelines only.
You will typically have 3 scans per cycle. Your first appointment includes a detailed gynaecological assessment; subsequent scans focus on the ovaries and are offered at a lower cost.

What to Expect
Before Your Scan
First complete scan:
Attend with a full bladder — drink 1 litre of water approximately 1 hour before your appointment. Finish drinking at least 20 minutes before scan time.
Follow-up scans:
Empty bladder required — these are performed transvaginally only.
Preparation checklist:
- Full bladder for first scan (empty for follow-ups)
- Know your cycle day (Day 1 = first day of bleeding)
- Bring any instructions from your fertility clinic
- Wear comfortable, loose clothing
During the Scan
Ovulation scans are performed transvaginally for maximum accuracy.
A thin ultrasound probe, covered with a sterile sheath and lubricating gel, is gently inserted into the vagina. The ultrasound signal is focused on the ovaries, allowing the sonographer to clearly visualise and measure your follicles.
The sonographer will measure the size of any growing follicles, signs that ovulation may be approaching, and evidence that ovulation has occurred.
Duration: 20-30 minutes for first appointment, 15-20 minutes for follow-ups
After Your Scan
First complete scan:
The sonographer will discuss the findings with you on the day and provide images. A Consultant Radiologist will review the detailed report, which will be sent to your GP or referring doctor within 2-3 working days.
Follow-up scans:
Results are available immediately after your appointment. The sonographer will explain:
- •The number and size of your follicles
- •Whether ovulation is approaching or has occurred
- •Timing guidance for intercourse or fertility procedures
You'll receive a digital copy of your report and images via email or to your mobile phone, which you can share directly with your gynaecologist or fertility specialist.
Understanding Your Results

| 10-14mm | Growing, becoming dominant |
| 15-17mm | Approaching maturity |
| 18-24mm | Mature, ovulation typically occurs within approximately 24-36 hours |
| Corpus luteum | Ovulation has occurred |
Signs of ovulation:
