What Is an Ovarian Ultrasound Scan?
An ovarian ultrasound is a detailed examination of the ovaries and surrounding pelvic structures using advanced 2D and 3D imaging. It's the standard scan when you want your ovaries checked — for suspected cysts, pelvic pain, fertility context, or ongoing surveillance of a known finding.
Screening: some ovarian conditions — including cancer — can be hard to detect early because symptoms are subtle. For women who want surveillance, particularly with a family history, this scan provides a detailed structured look at both ovaries.

What We Assess With This Scan
- Both ovaries (size, shape, internal structure)
- Any cysts or masses (simple, complex, solid)
- Free fluid in the pelvis
- Uterus
- Surrounding pelvic structures
This scan cannot assess:
- Definitively diagnose cancer (blood tests and specialist referral may be needed)
- Assess genetic mutations (genetic testing is separate)

What to Expect
Before Your Scan
Full bladder required for the first part of the scan: Drink 500ml-1 litre of water starting about 1 hour before your appointment. Finish drinking at least 20 minutes before your scan time.
Preparation checklist:
- Drink 500ml-1 litre of water 1 hour before appointment
- Wear comfortable, easily removable clothing
- Arrive 10 minutes before your appointment time
During the Scan
The scan begins with a transabdominal ultrasound (probe on your lower abdomen) with a full bladder. For more detailed views of the ovaries, a transvaginal ultrasound is usually recommended. You'll be asked to empty your bladder. A thin probe, covered with a sterile sheath, is gently inserted to provide much clearer, closer images of the ovaries. The scan typically takes 20-30 minutes.
After Your Scan
You can return to normal activities immediately. There are no restrictions.
Results & Next Steps
Your scan is reviewed by a consultant radiologist, who prepares a formal report. This report is sent to your referring doctor within 2-3 working days. If an abnormality is found, your GP may recommend blood tests (such as CA125), referral to a gynaecological oncologist, or additional imaging.
