A complaint of any pain in the abdomen is the most common symptom of an abdominal problem. When this is the case, the doctor may recommend an ultrasound scan. However, he may also recommend it for other reasons of concern such as findings on a blood test.
Primarily, abdominal ultrasound is used to examine the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas, spleen, and blood vessels of the abdomen. In addition, the ultrasound can detect stones in the gallbladder and kidneys, cysts, and some tumors. It can also detect an abdominal aortic aneurysm—a fatal condition that can be prevented by early detection.
Areas examined are as follows:
- Liver
- Kidneys
- Spleen
- Pancreas
- Gallbladder
- Aorta
The patient lies on an examination table. The sonographer uses warm gel and an ultrasound probe to look at all the solid upper abdominal organs. Several different positions are used to examine all of the organs from lying on your back to your right and left side. A full report will be sent to your doctor so the results can be discussed in depth with you at a time convenient for you and your doctor.
Note: You must be fasting for at least 6-7 hours prior to the scan. You should wear comfortable, loose- fitting clothing for your ultrasound exam. Be prepared to spend at least thirty minutes at the clinic for this test.

Abdominal Scan FAQs
Do I need an appointment?
Yes, ultrasound exams do need an appointment. If you cannot attend your appointment we appreciate if you can give 24 hours notice.
Do I need a referral letter from my GP to book an abdominal ultrasound scan?
Not always. Often you can attend without a GP referral; however, depending on the ultrasound scan requested, we may require a referral from your GP to ensure the correct ultrasound examination is performed.
What is the preparation for an abdominal ultrasound?
For the abdominal scan we ask that you fast for at least 6 hours prior to your appointment time. This includes food and drinks.
What organs are viewed in an abdominal scan?
During this examination, we evaluate the pancreas, liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, spleen, kidneys, and the aorta.
What can an abdomen scan see?
An abdomen scan can help diagnose a vast number of pathology, however, more common problems include gallstones, kidney stones, aortic aneurysm, liver disease, and identifying liver or kidney cysts.
What happens during the abdominal scan?
In the abdominal scan, the sonographer may ask that you pull your shirt up to expose the abdomen. The gel will be placed on the abdomen and the organs listed above will be evaluated. The sonographer may have you turn onto your sides or take in deep breaths and hold it, in order to get clear images and moved the organs below the ribs.
How long will the exam take?
The scheduled time for this exam is 30 minutes.
Who will report my abdomen exam?
After the sonographer has completed your exam the images will be sent to a consultant radiologist who will report your scan.
When will I receive my results?
Please note that Sonographers are not permitted to provide verbal results during or after the exam. After the ultrasound images have been thoroughly reviewed by our Consultant Radiologist, the official report will be issued and made available to you and/or your GP, usually within 24-48 hours. We are committed to ensuring the accuracy and reliability of your results and appreciate your understanding and patience.
