At Ultrasound Ireland, we're committed to providing you with timely, accurate diagnostic ultrasound scans. Concerns about testicular or scrotal health can be worrisome, often giving rise to anxiety. Our Testicles / Scrotal Ultrasound Scan offers a quick, painless, and non-invasive solution, helping to alleviate your concerns and can help guide your next steps in your care.
Areas Examined:
- Kidneys: Often the source of referred pain.
- Testicles / Scrotum: Central to your reproductive and overall health.
- Epididymis: The tubule that helps store and transport sperm.
When To Consider a Scrotal / Testes Scan
While any discomfort or abnormalities in the testicular region can be alarming, quick and accurate diagnostic imaging is the key to understanding the issue. This ultrasound is particularly recommended for:
- Unexplained testicular pain.
- Detected lumps in the testes or scrotum.
- Symptoms or suspicions of inflammation, as in epididymo-orchitis.
- If you have been referred by your GP or care provider.
What the Procedure Entails
The scan is conducted by a skilled sonographer, who will use a transducer with warm gel. The transducer will glide over your scrotal area to capture high-definition images of the structures inside. This is a straightforward procedure requiring no specific preparation on your part.
Note: Please allocate 20-30 minutes for your appointment to ensure a comprehensive examination.

Scrotal/Testes Ultrasound Scan FAQs
Do I need an appointment?
Yes, ultrasound exams do need an appointment. If you cannot attend your appointment we appreciate it if you can give 24 hours notice.
Do I need a referral letter from my GP to book a Scrotal/Testes scan?
Not always. Often you can attend without a GP referral; however, depending on the ultrasound scan requested, we may require a referral from your GP to ensure the correct ultrasound examination is performed.
What is the preparation for a testicular scan?
There is no preparation for this exam however you will be required to undress from the waist down.
What organs are viewed in the testicular scan?
The testicles, epididymis, and vessels within the scrotum will be evaluated. The kidneys may be evaluated as well.
What can a testicular ultrasound see?
The testicular ultrasound can identify cysts within the epididymis, testicular masses, and fluid within the scrotum. The ultrasound can evaluate blood flow to the testicles and check for herniation of the bowel into the testicles.
What happens during the scan?
The sonographer will have you undress from the waist down and lie facing up. You will have to cover your penis with a towel and leave the testicles exposed. The sonographer will then place the transducer with gel on the scrotum to evaluate the area. The sonographer may also have you point out or palpate the lump if you feel one and will place the transducer/camera directly on the area to evaluate it.
How long will the exam take?
The scheduled time for this exam is usually 30 minutes.
Who will report my exam?
After the sonographer has completed your exam the images will be sent to a consultant radiologist who will report your scan.
When will I receive my results?
Please note that Sonographers are not permitted to provide verbal results during or after the exam. After the ultrasound images have been thoroughly reviewed by our Consultant Radiologist, the official report will be issued and made available to you and/or your GP, usually within 24-48 hours. We are committed to ensuring the accuracy and reliability of your results and appreciate your understanding and patience.
