How is a soft tissue ultrasound scan performed?

A soft tissue ultrasound scan is a fairly simple procedure. A small amount of gel will be placed on the area of concern. A hand held probe (transducer) will then be moved over the skin creating diagnostic images that will appear on the ultrasound monitor. These images are permanently stored for further interpretation. This pain free scan usually takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes.

Once the procedure is finished, you can expect a brief explanation of the results. The images are sent to a Consultant Radiologist for interpretation and final report.

Understanding Lumps and Bumps

The appearance of lumps in any part of the body can be a cause of alarm. A simple soft tissue ultrasound scan is performed to help detect, assess and diagnose what type of lump is present. This procedure can provide vital information such as size, consistency, location and appearance. These are important details that will be used for a diagnosis.

An ultrasound may be requested to assess a lump or bump that may not have been covered in other tests provided. Rest assured that most lumps and bumps are not sinister.
