MORE DETAILS YOU NEED TO KNOW
When is the ovulation scan performed?
This scan is normally performed at 1–2 day intervals from about day nine of your menstrual cycle. Day one is measured as your first day of bleeding. You will often have three scans in any one cycle. A detailed gynaecological scan will be performed on your first appointment, subsequent scans within the same cycle focus on the ovaries and are lower cost.
What happens during an ovulation scan?
Ovulation scans are performed internally for maximum accuracy. A long narrow probe is inserted into the vagina and the ultrasound signal is focussed on the ovaries. The size of the follicles inside your ovaries will be measured when they are increased in size, and following ovulation when the egg has burst from the follicle and it becomes the corpus luteum.
These measurements help to determine the best time for sexual intercourse or fertility treatment in order for fertilisation to occur.
We will also check to see if you have any fibroids or polyps present that may cause complications with embryo implantation.
What’s included in the report?
The gynaecological survey will include clinical diagnostic information on the:
- Uterus
- Endometrium
- Right ovary
- Left ovary
Results from your ultrasound examination will be available immediately after your appointment. We will provide a digital copy for you and your gynaecologist or fertility specialist immediately and directly to your email address or mobile phone.
