What is an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm?
The aorta is a large artery that runs from the heart down through the abdomen to provide blood to the rest of the body. An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a condition in which a portion of the aorta wall becomes weak and begins to expand. If it expands to a certain size, it may rupture which can be fatal. The exact cause of an aneurysm is still unknown, but there are factors that put you at risk of developing an AAA.
A simple screening can detect an abdominal aneurysm easily. If a small AAA is found, patients can be regularly checked to see if it has grown to a serious size but if a large aneurysm is found it would require immediate attention to prevent the risk of rupture.
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: A Fatal Condition
Did you know that according to a study, 8 out of 10 people with ruptured AAA die before reaching the nearest hospital?
Did you know that a ruptured AAA could be fatal? According to the NHS Abdominal Aneurysm Screening Programme, more than 6,000 people in England and Wales die every year because of rupture.
What is an Aortic Aneurysm screening?
This screening is used to detect the presence of an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm by ultrasound. Screening can save lives. For this procedure, a doctor’s request is not required.
Please note that Sonographers are not permitted to provide verbal results during or after the exam. After the ultrasound images have been thoroughly reviewed by our Consultant Radiologist, the official report will be issued and made available to you and/or your GP, usually within 24-48 hours. We are committed to ensuring the accuracy and reliability of your results and appreciate your understanding and patience.
Who are at risk of developing AAA?
Males over 65 years old
Smokers
Patients with high blood pressure
Those with family history of AAA
If you are in a higher risk category, an AAA screening is essential.
What are the symptoms of AAA?
Those with an abdominal aortic aneurysm do not necessarily experience any symptoms, and one is sometimes found incidentally while having other tests. A ruptured AAA is considered a medical emergency and can be fatal. A screening test is important to allow management and treatment before the aneurysm ruptures.
How is an AAA detected?
A simple and painless ultrasound scan can easily detect an aneurysm. If an aneurysm is detected and is still small, it will be followed every 6 to 12 months to monitor growth. Once an AAA reaches a certain size, somewhere between 5 to 6cm in diameter surgery to repair the aneurysm will be considered. Many clients do not want to wait for an HSE appointment and choose to book the screening test privately. It allows a more convenient and affordable choice.
What can I expect in the procedure?
This procedure is a painless ultrasound scan that will only take about 10 to 15 minutes. It is advised to wear comfortable and loose clothing to facilitate the scan. You will also be given a written report, usually within 24 to 48 hours after your appointment and imaging if necessary.
During the procedure, a small amount of gel will be used on your abdominal area. A transducer will be placed on top of your abdomen that will enable the Sonographer to view images on the ultrasound monitor.
