What is a Kidney and Bladder Ultrasound?
A kidney and bladder ultrasound, also known as a renal tract scan, is a safe, non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the kidneys, bladder, and surrounding urinary structures.
This scan helps diagnose kidney stones, cysts, tumors, infections, and conditions affecting urine flow, providing essential insights into abnormal renal function and bladder health.
During the scan, a trained Sonographer applies a warm gel to the abdomen and moves a handheld device (transducer) over the skin to capture images. Since the kidneys are located at the back of the abdomen, imaging may require repositioning. Assessing the bladder is included for a complete evaluation.
Why is a Kidney and Bladder Ultrasound Performed?
Your doctor may recommend this scan if you experience:
- Frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Blood in the urine (hematuria)
- Unexplained lower back or abdominal pain
- Kidney stones or suspected obstruction
- Kidney cysts, tumors, or abnormalities
- Swelling in the kidneys (hydronephrosis)
- Chronic kidney disease or reduced kidney function
- Bladder dysfunction or difficulty emptying the bladder
- High blood pressure potentially linked to kidney function (this would require a Renal artery Doppler a secondary test)
This scan provides real-time imaging, making it useful for guiding procedures such as kidney biopsies or assessing blood flow to the kidneys using Doppler ultrasound.
How to Prepare for Your Kidney and Bladder Ultrasound
• Full Bladder Required: You may be asked to drink at least 800 ml (or 3-4 glasses) of water about 60 minutes before the appointment and avoid urinating until after the bladder is scanned. This helps provide a clearer view of the bladder and urinary tract.
• Fasting for at least 6 hours is required.
• Comfortable Clothing: Wear loose-fitting clothes.
If you have difficulty holding a full bladder or require special assistance, please contact our clinic before your appointment.
What to Expect During the Scan
1. Positioning: You will lie on an examination table, and a warm gel will be applied to your abdomen or lower back.
2. Scanning Process: A sonographer will gently move a handheld transducer over the skin to capture images of your kidneys and bladder. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly or turn on your side for better visualization.
3. Bladder Assessment: In some cases, you may be asked to empty your bladder mid-scan so we can evaluate how well your bladder empties.
4. Exam Completion: The entire procedure takes about 20-30 minutes. It is painless, though mild pressure may be felt over tender areas.
Results and Next Steps
• Your ultrasound images will be reviewed by a Radiologist, and a detailed report will be shared with your doctor.
• Results are typically available within 24-48 hours.
• If any abnormalities are detected, your doctor may recommend further tests, follow-up scans, or treatment options.
