Is Ultrasound Covered By My GloHealth, Irish Life, Laya, or VHI Private Insurance?
We have no control over if your ultrasound/outpatient radiology insurance claim will be paid by your insurance provider.
However, partial or full coverage of the costs of your ultrasound scans may be covered by your health insurance plan, please check directly with your insurer to see if they cover and your plan includes ultrasound/outpatient radiology coverage.
Keep in mind, if they don’t cover your scan, you are still able to pay out of pocket to attend our centre.
While many of our patients do successfully submit claims for out-patient ultrasounds to their insurance provider, successful submission is based on your excess and level of coverage, you may receive part or all of the costs back.
Overview:
At Ultrasound Dimensions, we accept all patients with or without private insurance. Currently no hospital or ultrasound centre offers a direct settlement for the full cost of an outpatient ultrasound examination.
Ultrasound falls under the umbrella of outpatient radiology. All radiology exams on an outpatient basis are paid by at the hospital or clinic at the time of the examination no matter what centre you may attend.
We have patients that have successfully submitted their receipt to VHI and other private companies for reimbursement and others who have not been successful. We are not on the approved centre list but there is no clinic that we are aware of that offers direct settlement for an ultrasound so where you attend for your ultrasound should not affect your submission.
However, we recommend contacting your insurance company directly for the specific terms and conditions included in your particular policy. Take a moment to review your table of benefits and excess. To our knowledge no policy offers 100% reimbursement for an out-patient radiology appointment for ultrasound. Ultrasound falls under the umbrella of “other”
You will receive a receipt that includes:
- Type of diagnostic ultrasound performed;
- Cost of the examination
- Name of the reporting Consultant Radiologist
- Name of Diagnostic Medical Sonographer
- Pricing breakdown to include the professional fee
When submitting your invoice to your insurance provider choose:
Treatment Type: Other / Screening
All medical ultrasound scans at our centre are performed by a Radiographer / Ultrasonographer and reported by a Consultant Radiologist who is registered with insurers.
Patients querying whether their scan is covered by insurance should be advised to check with their health insurance provider. They may also be able to claim a portion of the cost on the Med1 form as part of their annual tax return. Details and forms are available on www.revenue.ie.
Procedure codes: patients with queries about procedure codes should be advised to check with their insurance company directly as there are no codes for an outpatient ultrasound.
